Differences between cologne, perfume, fragrance, scent and aroma

Have you ever felt confused looking for that perfect perfume to give your partner? Or maybe you were looking for a fragrance to surprise your mother on a special day? What about giving a friend a cologne for their birthday? Have you ever considered buying rose essence or handcrafted scents?

As you can see, it is very easy to use the terms "cologne", "fragrance", "scent", "perfume" and "aroma" interchangeably, but this would be a mistake. Although many do not know it, these five terms are so different from each other that ignorance of the difference leads to mistakes and disappointments.

But that's what we are here for, today at Sam Parfums we are going to solve all those doubts about the difference between these four concepts: perfume, cologne, fragrance, aroma and essence. No more mistakes and after this you will always get it right when choosing a gift of this type.

Let us begin.

Defining the concepts of fragrance, scent, perfume and cologne

To get off on the right foot, nothing better than to start by defining what is what:

What is a fragrance?

It is what you smell, what you perceive with your sense of smell.. Every perfume, cologne, or, in general, aromatic substances and odoriferous materials, has a particular smell, and that is what we perceive with our sense of smell.

It should be noted that the word "fragrance" has a positive connotation. That is, that fresh smell that we perceive as pleasant every time we try a new bottle in our favourite perfumery is a fragrance.

As we will see below, the difference between scent and fragrance is in the concept. Fragrance is directly associated with perfume, while scent is more generic.

What is a perfume?

A perfume is a substance or a mixture of substances that gives a very particular smell.. It is commonly found in liquid form, but lately there are many manufacturers who also produce it in solid form.

With "perfume", in the field of perfumes and colognes, is a product that men and women apply to their bodies to give off a pleasant fragrance.. It is the substance, liquid or solid that gives off a particular fragrance that we like.

What do you mean by "olfactory notes" in a perfume?

When you apply a perfume, your experience may be totally different from someone else smelling the same product.

This experience is built in three phases known as top, heart and base notes. Each has its moment and plays a key role in how we perceive fragrance.

1. Exit notes: the first impression

They are the greeting of the perfume, the first notes you feel when you apply it. They are usually light, fresh and full of energy. Ingredients such as citrus fruits (lemon, bergamot, orange) or aromatic herbs (mint, basil) are the protagonists. Although their presence is brief - they last between 5 and 15 minutes - they are crucial to attract our attention.

2. Heart notes: we now enter into the soul of the perfume.

Once the top notes disappear, the heart notes enter the scene, the ones that really define the character of the perfume. They are warmer and more balancedThe fragrances are floral (rose, jasmine, lavender) or juicy fruits (peach, apple). These notes usually last between 30 minutes and 2-3 hours, creating that enveloping sensation that accompanies you for a good part of the day.

3. Base notes: what really lingers in a perfume

Finally, come the base notes, the ones that stay with you even when the rest of the perfume seems to have disappeared. Here we find deep and warm scents, such as woods (sandalwood, cedar), resins (amber, myrrh) or a sweet touch of vanilla. These notes can last for hours and are responsible for making a fragrance unforgettable.

Think of that feeling when, at the end of the day, you still feel a soft trace of the perfume on your skin. That's thanks to the base notes, which give it body and durability.

¿Why are olfactory notes so important when choosing your perfume?

A perfume is not static, it is an experience that evolves over time. The top notes capture your attention, the heart notes envelop you, and the base notes are the ones that stay with you for hours. Understanding this not only helps you appreciate a fragrance more, but also helps you choose the one that really suits you.

And keep in mind that you should always try the perfume yourself. Remember what we said about everyone having a different experience with the same product? That's because the chemistry of our skin influences how notes develop. That's why it's best to try the perfume on your wrist or on the back of your hand and you'll really know if the character of the perfume suits you.

What is a colony?

A cologne, or eau de cologne, is a type of perfume. It is a substance, just like perfume, a product that gives off a fragrance, but there is a nuance: it is a substance that is not a perfume. The cologne has a lower degree of concentration of essential oil, or essence. Depending on the manufacturing process, the whole essential oil, or just the essence, is used to make artificial fragrances. We will go into this in more detail later.

This is why perfume lasts longer than cologne. A perfume has approximately 30% of essence or essential oil in its composition.while a colony has about 8%.

What is an aroma?

Continuing with the definitions, A scent is anything that gives off a smell.

"But that's a fragrance too". Exactly, but there is a nuance: the context. A fragrance always has a positive connotation, related to perfumery. A scent is also positive, however, it is not only associated with perfumes or colognes, it is also related to food.

That is, what you smell when you walk past a bakery is the aroma of freshly baked bread or buns.. Therefore, you will always find that fragrance is often associated with adjectives such as "fresh fragrances" or "soft fragrances", while aromas are more often associated with "coffee aroma" or "sweet aroma".

And, to add a further point, scents are capable of greatly affecting our mood. For example, smelling coffee can remind you of the time when you used to meet someone you loved at your favourite coffee shop every Sunday. Or, when you smell something sweet, you get hungry because it reminds you of the delicious pastries your grandmother used to make for you.

We have a post that talks precisely about the functioning of our brain and aromatherapyif you are interested in the subject.

So, what is an essence?

Aromas and essences, the basis of samparfums.es fragrances.

One essence is the basis for all other concepts. It is the element without which scents, fragrances, perfumes and colognes would not exist..

The essence is the raw material from which all other elements are extracted. To be a little more fussy, in cosmetics, it would be called "aromatic essence". It and essential oil are used interchangeably as concepts, but this is not entirely correct.

A scent is the base odour of the essential oil. It is extracted by chemical processes and then combined with other essences to produce unique fragrances that will eventually become colognes and perfumes.

The essential oil, however, is the substance that contains the essence.. Essential oils are always in liquid form and are extracted from plants such as peppermint, lavender or jasmine. While the essence is only the odour base, the essential oil is the odour and the substance (oil) that contains it. Apart from cosmetic use in colognes and perfumesare also widely used in aromatherapy.

So, to recapitulate and to summarise, we can conclude that:

  • The essence is the base odour of the essential oil.
  • The combination of essences results in the fragrances.
  • A fragrance is the unique scent, a combination of essences, which is given off by a colony o perfume. And a aroma is the same, a unique scent, a combination of scents, but more related to a food context.
  • A perfume is a substance in liquid or solid form that we humans use to enhance our smell. In other words, we use a perfume to give off a fragrance that is pleasant to smell. A colony is the same, the difference with perfume lies in the concentration of essential oil (not essence) used in its manufacture.
